Taking up golf
|
It's come to that time of my life when I feel I want to take up golf. I've only played a couple of times using a mates clubs and want to get my own set.
I have a bit of money to spend, but don't want to pay the earth. Anyone got any good recommendations? I want a set that will be forgiving of my wild thrashing at the ball!
Also, I'm about 6'4, does that effect what clubs I should get?
Cheers in advance

As per JAFKD. Book a dozen lessons first. You will not regret it and you'll be a single handicap golfer within 12 months.

Get measured up before buying ANY clubs to get the lengths of shafts cut to your height, standard clubs will be too short for you and you will be crouched over affecting your swing in a negative way. Then get some lessons to start without bad habits.

It will DRIVE you insane.
Get a £100 set from sports direct. I've got them as my second set and can play a round in 5 over quite easily. Bargain.

Get lessons. Pricey but well worth it.
Hit the chipping and putting greens rather than going range and trying to whack balls. Will take loads of shots off your scores.
I bloody love golf.

Lard - as Bullett says it's essential you get custom fitted clubs. There is a lot more to it than just your height though.Swing speed, lie angle and a host of other things.Your height is about all that will be taken into consideration at say American Golf Discount and Nevada Bobs.
Your best off to use an independent club maker. Perhaps just get a half set made at first in case you don't stick with it.
Are you within comfortable driving range of Margeretting, just south of Chelmsford?
If so use this bloke based at Hylands Golf Complex :-

I and many of my friends do. He's helped my game no end (went from 19 to my now 11 handicap in under 4 years). The one thing he's not is salesman. If you won't benefit from something, He won't sell you it. As he has said to several of my friends.
You actually get to hit balls on a range, rather than just into a net. he also has computerised, radar club swing and ball speed and spin kit.
I'm marginally taller than you, so you'd think I'd need longer clubs? My driver is actually 1/2 inch shorter than a standard driver length. This was the 1st club I got from Lee.
Price wise he's comparable, to say web based standard fitting suppliers
Just trying to illustrate more to custom fitting than just a players physical dimensions.
Get some lessons too

American Golf will do all of the measuring, and then lie and sell you whatever they have in stock.
The length fitting of clubs is more your hand to the floor measurement than your height. You'll possibly need the clubs bent more upright rather than made longer.
You can buy a package set for under £300 that'll be alright, but if you get into it you'll want to replace the whole lot within a year.
100% agree with getting lessons - absolute must.

You dont need lessons Golf is an incredibly easy game. Just do not try and think you're a pro EVER. Hitting straight is the only lesson you need.

There's always plenty of decent golf stuff on eBay, decent cavity backed irons from one of the big manufacturers is a good starting place, something like Taylormade, Ping or Titleist will work well. I wouldn't get fitted until you've had some lessons or played a while as your swing and clubhead speed with improve over time and playing more. Getting fitted is the right thing to do, but not until your able to break or get really close to breaking 100.
Don't worry about distance, learn to play from within 100 yards and you'll lower your scores more than booming drives, however tempting it is. I pay regularly with an old fella who can't hit it more than 200 yards, but he gets more than his fair share of good scores through having a great short game.
